Buckle Collars: (also known as flat collars) These are the most commonly seen collars and are what most people think of putting on their dog. Buckle Collars are great for attaching identification tags (a must have for any dog!) and come in a multitude of colors and styles. They can be made from a variety of materials, from hemp to nylon to leather. Leather collars tend to wear quite well and are a favorite choice of mine. A Buckle Collar can be used as your dogs primary collar if he does not have a problem with pulling against the leash or need any communication via leash corrections. While it may seem to be the “tamest” of the collars, a dog that consistently pulls against a buckle collar is more likely to sustain damage to his trachea than a dog walked correctly on a choke chain or a pinch collar. A buckle collar can be worn at the same time that other types of collars are used in order to keep your dog’s identification on him at all times. Nylon Choke Dog Collar

Choke Chain (Slip Collar) is a length of chain or nylon rope with rings at either end such that the collar can be formed into a loop around the top of the dog's neck, just behind the ears. The ring which connects to the leash goes over the back of the dog's neck, not under. When the leash is attached to the dead ring the collar does not constrict on the dog's neck. When the leash is attached to the live ring the chain slips (adjusts) tighter when pulled and slips looser when tension is released. This type of collar should never be left on an unattended dog and always removed when the leash is removed.Martingale collar. A less common form of dynamic collar is what is referred to as a martingale collar or a limited slip choke chain. These collars are generally made of nylon with a chain loop linking the two ends of the nylon. The leash is attached to the chain loop and when pulled it tightens the nylon around the dog's neck. This collar gives even less of a mechanical advantage than the choke chain, and it can be difficult to fit properly. The advantage to this collar, is that there is a definite limit to how much pressure, you can put on the dog's trachea because the collar can only close to the specific diameter and no smaller. So, fitted correctly, this may be a good choice for giving a mild correction without choking the dog.Ray Allen Manufacturing dog collars are designed for professional K9 handlers.
