The great Dane is a giant dog breed and is one of the largest breeds, being second only to the Irish wolfhound. The diet of the great Dane should be well-balanced and you should opt for quality foods for this fast growing breed. Pay special attention to the feeding schedule and food amounts during the first six months of the puppy's life.

Another thing to look for in a quality dog food is glucosamine and chondroitin, especially when feeding Great Danes. While the amount of glucosamine and chondroitin per serving is typically minimal to me it adds a bit of reassurance that we are promoting overall good joint health. It is also wise to further supplement with a glucosamine and chondroitin program such as Cosoquin with any giant breed from 2-years on. This series of articles will try and un complicate things a bit and look at all options in producing a good great dane dog food regime.

Like many nutritional myths perpetuated on the internet, the myth of BEET PULP as a negative ingredient was originally started by a dog food company over 30 years ago. The intent was to dissuade consumers from using pelletized foods and move over to their product which was in the form of meat meal (non pelletized). Because this propaganda was started over 30 years ago, long before internet accessibility, this information was perpetuated through paid advertisements published in breed magazines such as Dog World, Great Dane Dispatch, Great Dane Reporter etc. This was done in an article format, but it was actually a paid advertisements, much like the ones you see done in dog magazines today. It's confusing to the consumer because these "thesis" appear as a legitimate unbiased article published by the magazines writers, when in fact it is a form of sophisticated propaganda. For a couple of reasons - Hormones play a big role in your dog backing off their food - coming into season, the false pregnancy, teething around 5-7 months of age, and inactivity all have a hand in them backing off eating. Food consumption can be directly related to the amount of free exercise your dog gets on a daily basis. I have 2 Great Danes at home right now, 3 and 4 yrs of age - intact male and spayed female. Normally, the female at 125# eats 5 cups total a day divided AM and PM. The male is 165# and in good weight on 6 - 7 cups a day.
