Erythromycin eye ointment is a prescription antibiotic which can be used in dogs for eye and eyelid infections. Dogs can easily develop eye infections due to a series of factors: bacteria, foreign matter, irritants, the Lyme disease, herpes virus or other factors. Erythromycin eye ointment is useful in fighting infections caused by bacteria which affect the cornea and the conjunctiva. Given that erythromycin can have serious side effects, it is recommended to apply the treatment only if prescribed by a veterinarian.

The lens of the eye can become dislocated and push forward. Lens dislocation usually affects middle-aged dogs of the terrier breeds. It is most common in Smooth and Wire Fox Terriers and Jack Russell Terriers. The eye may bulge from excess fluid and high intraocular pressure and appear red. Spasm of the eyelid and tearing may be evident. Treatment consists of lowering the pressure within the eye to normal levels. The lens is removed as soon as possible. Topical and systemic (whole body) antibiotics and corticosteroids are usually prescribed. Uses of Combination Antibiotic Eye Medication for Dogs and Cats.

Dry eye (KCS in dogs) is a disorder of the eye glands that produce the liquid part of tears. Dogs with KCS don't produce enough tear film to keep their eyes adequately lubricated. This causes a dog's cornea and conjunctiva to become dry, thickened, red, irritated and inflamed. If not diagnosed and managed, KCS can lead to painful corneal ulceration, eye infection, impaired vision, and even blindness. In most cases, the cause of KCS in dogs is unknown, but an autoimmune condition is believed to take place. KCS may also occur secondary to general anesthesia, trauma, and prior surgical removal of the third eyelid gland. The use of antibiotics and many diseases like hypothyroidism, canine distemper, Cushing's Disease, Addison's Disease, and diabetes may also play a role in KCS. Signs of KCS include excessive squinting or blinking, light sensitivity, eye redness, swollen inflamed eyelids, protrusion of the third eyelid, dull dry cornea, or thick yellow or green discharge. Your dog’s eyesight is valuable and nature protects the eye from dust and bacteria by a membrane called the conjunctiva which protects the sensitive eye. Conjunctivitis can affect one eye or both. Usually if it affects both it is caused by an infection from a virus or bacteria, but environmental irritants such as dust, or allergens can be other causes. If there is a discharge present, for example mucous or a pus-filled fluid, your veterinarian may need to prescribe topical antibiotics to help clear the condition.
