In the 1980s veterinarian and animal behaviourist discovered that despite evidence on the peak learning periods in animals, few dog trainers worked with puppies before they were six months old. Dunbar founded , the first off-leash training program specifically for puppies, which emphasizes the importance of teaching bite inhibition, sociality, and other basic household manners, to dogs under six months of age. Dunbar has written numerous books, and is known for his international seminar presentations and award-winning videos on puppy and dog behavior and training.

Before taking your dog into any business, either public accommodation or pet friendly, make sure he is 100% toilet trained and 100% vaccinated. It is important for your dog to learn the exact places where toileting is and is not approved. If you never allow him to toilet in a business as a puppy, he will never do so as an adult (see the church example in number 4). A rare mistake in your home is an annoyance that can be retrained. A mistake in a business can get him banned for life. Dogs that are not fully vaccinated are at risk for catching diseases from other dogs. That's why young puppies should not interact with unknown or unvaccinated dogs until they complete their puppy series and the vet says it's okay. Another vaccination issue that many over look is rabies. Many vets will recommend holding off on rabies vaccinations until the puppy is 4 months old. Rabies is not generally given before 3 months of age because the immune system is undergoing too many changes between 8 and 12 weeks for the rabies vaccination to be effective. If your puppy accidentally nips someone or even just bumps into them with their mouth open, his razor sharp baby teeth may scratch or make a tiny puncture. That alone is enough to get him quarantined right in the middle of his primary socialization period. So be especially careful who you let near his mouth until he is vaccinated for rabies. Either restrict contact to friends and family, or practice deftly presenting your puppy's behind for petting or stroking his face yourself while others pet so that he can't accidentally touch anyone with his teeth and get accused of biting.

First, the program is an intensive socialization program. The dog learns to be around and greet many people. They live with many other dogs. Basic manners training includes sit to greet a person, sit to go through a door, crate training and house training. Basic obedience includes: sit, sit-stay, down, down-stay, come when called, basic heeling on lead and we deal with any problem behaviors the dog has. Many dogs will go on to learn hand signals, or other tricks. We also feature confidence building with agility equipment training at some facilities. The Colorado Correctional Industries (CCI), Prison Trained K-9 Companion Program (PTKCP) is a program which provides the outside community with pre-trained dogs. Dogs graduating from this program fill many roles: everything from a wonderfully trained basic family pet, to a nursing home dog, to very sophisticated assistance dogs which perform a variety of tasks for their masters. These dogs are perfect pets for the youngest child to an elderly parent. For over 80 years, assistance dogs have worked successfully in public and won the public's acceptance by achieving high behavioral and training standards which set them apart from pets and other animals. Their exemplary conduct led to state legislatures granting access rights to the blind, deaf and mobility impaired. Those early teams paved the way for the Americans With Disabilities Act, which has opened the door to individuals with a wide range of physical and mental impairments being able to have access rights.
