udd Lee has never met a dog cookie he did not like, but his choosy mom wants something with quality ingredients that can be made at home. Judd Lee especially loves it when these peanut butter cookies are fresh out of the oven. This recipe came from a former veterinary hospital client, and it never fails to be a hit with our neighborhood canine pals. After much trial and error I've found that most homemade dog biscuits are successful with one part liquid to three parts dry ingredients. You can customize this recipe by adding and subtracting ingredients your dog loves. Judd Lee prefers to mix it up a little. His two paws up favorite combinations include pumpkin and cinnamon, bacon crumbles and uncooked oatmeal, or barley with a little bit of bacon fat. Certain foods can lead to gastrointestinal upset and toxicity, so it is important to note any that are potentially harmful before making additions to the recipe. The ASPCA has a list of people foods that should be avoided. Items to certainly avoid are garlic, grapes, onion, salt, chocolate, macadamia nuts and artificial sweeteners. - Make with Dog Shaped Lollipop MoldsOur puppy Buford loves his peanut butter. He often refuses to eat his food unless there’s a little bit of peanut butter mixed in with it. These cookies are the perfect way to mix in a little bit of that flavor he loves without the slop that goes with feeding peanut butter to a dog with giant cheeks. They are also very excellent treats for being a good dog 🙂But what to make for a dog that loves whole foods just as much as I do!? Well, when I checked the calendar and saw that today is National Peanut Butter Cookie Day, I knew exactly what I should make. Peanut Butter Cookie Dog Treats that are tasty enough (and safe!) for humans to munch on too. After all, I never share a recipe that I haven’t tried myself, so I knew I needed to make something that I could eat and Ella would LOVE as well.Rather than just cut off the messy peanut butter gravy train, I’ve kept stirring it into his kibble. He has trained me well. Also, I am a sucker for a pouty dog face. But I digress. These cookies are the perfect compromise: Buford gets his peanut buttery goodness without sharing it with the rest of us. After the cookies are cooled, I put half of them into a sealed container to use as treats. The other half is placed into a large zipper storage bag and pounded with the flat side of a meat mallet until they are pretty well pulverized. I put these in a separate sealed container and sprinkle the crushed cookies on Buford’s food for the week. I use about a tablespoon of these “sprinkles” on each dish of food, which roughly works out to a light coating across his whole food bowl. Peanut butter makes Buford almost as happy as tennis balls … shout out to my good friends at Kong for these supper rugged squeaky balls that survive months even with the beating my two give them.
